Design Process
I love : Plant driven designs; rich contrasts between plants and materials; mixing different materials without losing the overall coherence; researching the possibilities; site visits and analysis; a natural flow of and logic to the layout; playfulness; interest throughout the seasons; connecting areas and creating new destinations; artful and experimental details; movement and height varieties; highlighting the natural light; biodiversity; magical and unique spaces.
In the end, the design choices all depend on the specific location with its unique starting points. Whether the inquiry concerns a landscape, a garden or a public space, the design process is more or less the same, although emphasizing different areas.
After assembling all your wishes and needs, I will first visit the location to get a feeling of the scale and its place in its specific surroundings. This is also a great opportunity to meet you in person and get a better understanding of the motivations behind your wishes.
If we have a match, the analysis and research of the site and its surroundings will begin, which is particularly important for designs on a bigger scale like the (urban) landscape. The outcome will result in a sketch design that will be presented to the client to see if we’re on the same page and if all the wishes are covered or alterations have to be made. In the sketch design you’ll get an idea of the planting palette, the mood, the materials, the pathways, seating areas etc. We probably had a couple of contact moments before, so there shouldn’t be any big surprises.
After this the scale design will be finalized, the planting design will be made and the execution in cooperation with specialized contractors can begin. For examples see my portfolio page. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or requests!
